Is Universal Express Pass Worth It? What to Know Before You Buy

If you're planning a trip to Universal Orlando, you've probably come across Universal Express Pass. It's an optional upgrade that promises shorter waits at many of the parks' most popular attractions.

And while cutting those wait times is super appealing, Express Pass can add a lot to your vacation budget, especially if you're traveling with the whole family.

So, is Universal Express Pass worth the extra money? Here's what you should know before deciding.

What Exactly Is Universal Express Pass?

Universal Express Pass allows you to use a shorter, separate queue at participating attractions instead of the regular standby line.

There are two main options:

  • Universal Express: Use the Express queue once per participating attraction.

  • Universal Express Unlimited: Use the Express queue repeatedly at participating attractions throughout the day.

Express Unlimited is available at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. Standard Express Pass options are also available at Epic Universe and Volcano Bay.

Express Pass doesn't completely eliminate waiting in line, and not every attraction allows Express Pass usage. It’s important to know that the costs for your Express Passes are on top of the regular park ticket prices.

How Much Does Universal Express Pass Cost?

Universal uses date-based pricing, so the cost varies depending on when you're visiting, which park you're visiting, and which Express Pass you purchase.

Busy periods, including holidays and school breaks, generally mean higher prices.

For a family of four, purchasing Express Passes for multiple days can add hundreds of dollars or more to the vacation cost.

That's why you need to consider your entire vacation itinerary before adding Express Pass to every park day.

When Is Universal Express Pass Worth It?

Express Pass can make a difference in several situations.

You're visiting during a busy period. Spring break, summer vacation, and major holidays can bring substantial crowds. Shorter waits may allow you to experience more attractions.

You have limited time. If you're visiting Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure in just one or two days, Express Pass can help you fit more into your schedule.

Your family loves thrill rides. If everyone wants to experience as many major attractions as possible, Express Pass can be particularly valuable.

You prefer a relaxed pace. Less time waiting in line leaves more room for meals, shows, shopping, and afternoon breaks.

When Can You Skip Express Pass?

Not every guest needs Express Pass. Consider this:

If your trip is long enough and you have time to visit at a more leisurely pace, you may not feel the same urgency as a family in town for just a day or two.

Traveling during a quieter period can also make Express Pass less necessary, although crowd levels are never guaranteed.

And if your family prefers shows, character experiences, or exploring the parks over thrill rides, you might not use Express Pass enough to justify the expense.

Height requirements are another consideration. If younger children can't ride many participating attractions, purchasing Express Pass for everyone may not make financial sense.

Don't Overlook the Universal Hotel Advantage

Most travelers don’t know that your hotel may already include Express Pass with your stay. Top-tier Universal hotels offer this benefit as a perk to resort guests.

Guests staying at Loews Royal Pacific Resort, Hard Rock Hotel, and Loews Portofino Bay Hotel receive Express Unlimited access at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.

This benefit is available on eligible check-in and check-out days, which can make even a one-night stay valuable.

For families considering purchasing Express Pass separately, it's worth comparing the total cost of staying at one of these hotels. Sometimes paying more for the hotel can make better financial sense once you factor in the Express Unlimited benefit.

Remember, park admission is still required, and the complimentary Express Unlimited benefit doesn't apply at Epic Universe or Volcano Bay at this time.

What About Express Pass at Epic Universe?

Epic Universe offers its own standard Universal Express Pass, allowing one Express entry at each participating attraction.

However, Express Unlimited isn't currently available at Epic Universe, even for guests staying at hotels that include Express Unlimited at the original two parks.

Not every Epic Universe attraction participates, so it's important to know which rides are included before purchasing.

If Epic Universe is a major part of your vacation, its Express Pass needs to be considered separately.

So, Is Universal Express Pass Worth the Money?

For some families, absolutely. For others, that money might be better spent on an additional park day, a nicer hotel, or another vacation experience while visiting Universal.

The biggest consideration isn't simply how much Express Pass costs. It's how much time you have, when you're visiting, and what you want to accomplish during your trip.

And before purchasing Express Pass separately, don't forget to compare Universal's hotel options. The included Express Unlimited benefit can sometimes change the entire vacation budget.
