Which Cruise Line Is Best for You?

You've decided to take a cruise. Now comes the next question: which cruise line should you choose?

With so many options available, it's tempting to compare prices and itineraries first. But before you do, consider what kind of vacation you want. Some cruise lines focus on family entertainment, others on dining and nightlife, and some are more about exploring the destinations themselves.

Let’s break it down by vacation type.

The Family Cruise: Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line is an obvious choice for families who love Disney, but these ships offer more than character meet-and-greets.

You'll find Broadway-style entertainment, themed restaurants, deck parties, and excellent children's clubs. Disney's rotational dining system also lets you try different restaurants while keeping the same serving team.

And adults aren't forgotten. There are adults-only lounges, restaurants, spa experiences, and quiet areas where parents can enjoy some time to themselves.

Additionally, the Disney Cruise Line is consistently rated among the best in the business, year after year. Your whole party will be well taken care of.

Best for: Families with younger children, multigenerational groups, and Disney fans who appreciate themed entertainment and attentive service.

Virgin Voyages: Adults Only, With a Different Approach

On the opposite side of the spectrum, if you're looking for an adults-only getaway, Virgin Voyages offers a less traditional cruise experience.

You won't find large traditional buffets, assigned dining times, or formal nights. Instead, Virgin features a variety of included restaurants, creative entertainment, fitness classes, and plenty of places to relax or socialize.

Basic Wi-Fi, fitness classes, and essential nonalcoholic beverages are included. Alcoholic drinks and other extras cost more.

The atmosphere is generally more energetic than a traditional cruise, with lively evenings and unconventional entertainment. But that doesn't mean you have to spend your vacation partying. There's plenty of room for a quieter getaway, too.

Best for: Couples, groups of friends, and adults who enjoy good food, a social atmosphere, and a more contemporary vacation.

Royal Caribbean: Plenty to Keep Everyone Busy

Royal Caribbean is known for ships packed with activities, entertainment, and options for just about every age group.

Depending on the ship, you might find waterslides, surf simulators, rock-climbing walls, ice-skating shows, and Broadway-style productions.

This makes Royal Caribbean particularly appealing to families with children of different ages. Younger kids have dedicated programs, teenagers have their own activities, and adults have plenty to enjoy.

It's also a good choice for extended family vacations, where everyone may have different interests.

Keep in mind that the experience varies significantly by ship. One of Royal Caribbean's newest megaships will feel very different from a smaller, older vessel.

Specialty dining, beverage packages, Wi-Fi, and certain activities may also cost extra.

Best for: Active families, extended families, and travelers who want plenty of activities and entertainment onboard.

Viking River Cruises: When it’s About the Destinations

Viking River Cruises offers a completely different experience.

Rather than sailing aboard large ocean ships, Viking's river cruises explore destinations such as Europe's Rhine, Danube, and Seine rivers.

The ships are smaller, the atmosphere is quieter, and the focus is on the places you're visiting.

You'll spend your days exploring historic towns, visiting cultural landmarks, and learning about the regions you're traveling through.

Viking includes a guided excursion in each port, onboard meals, Wi-Fi, and beer and wine with lunch and dinner.

These cruises are for adults 18 and older, and you won't find waterslides, casinos, or elaborate nighttime productions.

Instead, expect comfortable accommodations, destination-focused experiences, and the opportunity to visit several places without constantly packing and changing hotels.

Best for: Couples, history enthusiasts, and travelers who enjoy sightseeing, culture, and a quieter vacation.

Don't Compare Cruise Prices Without Looking at What's Included

The lowest advertised cruise fare isn't necessarily the best value.

Disney includes much of its family entertainment and dining. Virgin includes restaurants and amenities that may cost extra elsewhere. Royal Caribbean offers plenty of activities, but additional packages can affect the final price. Viking includes guided excursions that might otherwise be a significant expense.

Even within the same cruise line, the ship, itinerary, and cabin category can make a big difference.

So, Which Cruise Line Should You Choose?

A great cruise isn't necessarily about booking the biggest ship, the newest ship, or even the one with the best price. It's about finding a vacation you'll genuinely enjoy.

And with so many ships, destinations, and itineraries to choose from, the differences aren't always obvious at first glance. That's where having someone who knows the cruise lines and understands what you're looking for can make all the difference.
